There will be a huge tunnel (‘the station square’) under all tracks and the distinctive main building will be completely renovated and restored to its original state and colours as much as possible. Because this is also a precise matter for the National Office, Arjan van Lochem’s (colour) technical experience comes in handy.
Anker Stuy Coatings’ account manager brought the necessary colour charts this Tuesday morning. However, it is impossible to find a complete “match” for all the (transparent) colours. But that’s not a problem. “As long as we know what type of wood was used, our colour lab can reproduce it,” Arjan says. “Even if multiple layers are applied. I will send Rolinka some options soon.”
Rolinka Otten, as conservation advisor on behalf of NS Stations Property, is watching Arjan with a critical eye: “We want to deliver the station in as original a state as possible, including the original paint colours.” When Arjan carefully scratches off the layers of paint with a knife, no less than five colours emerge on a window frame: dark purple (the top layer), creamy white, dark green, dark brown and finally the original colour: a clear coat.
The white part in particular stands out, but is quickly explained by Rolinka. “Don’t ask me why, but it was a trend in the 1970s to paint everything white or gray.” If it were up to Rolinka, the window frame would go back to its original state. And so with a clear coat, bringing out the natural beauty of the oak again.
Arjan van Lochem has been involved in the project in Groningen for some time because he advised Timmerfabriek Homan on the window frames, on which Aplex Aqua ZM 3-layer was applied. This is the first bio-based industrial paint in the Netherlands and therefore immediately the most sustainable option. For on-site painting, the painters used Waarborg Elite.
It is clear that Rolinka has high standards for painting, even if it is not always in direct view of the many travelers (in 2023, there were over 16,000 visitors). “I want to be able to look at this after I retire, so to speak. It certainly comes with a high price tag, but above all I want it done right – that’s more important than speed.”
The NS, which owns the station building, is working on bringing several stations with a cultural-historical value back to to the original state. Harlingen, Zwolle and Meppel, among others, have already been taken care of. Under the slogan ‘Groningen already has the most beautiful train station, it will only get more beautiful’, the construction of ‘The Main Station still take a while. The completion is scheduled for late 2025.
